Some tips on HTC Wizard / Cingualr 8125 / iMate K-JAM / T-mobile MDA

The tips in this post are nothing new but just a collection of the tips posted in the internet. I wanted to keep them handy!

  • Mapping the Messaging button to <Start Menu> and the Internet Explorer button to <Ok/Close> makes life much simpler. No need to slide the keyboard and fear dropping the Wizard, when using with only one hand [I need to use the other to hold my steering wheel ;-)]. If you need those Messaging and IE buttons, here's an alternative

  • Press and hold down the Comm Manager button (the one above the volume slider) to toggle the vibrate mode [useful before and after meetings]

  • Activate Microsoft Voice Command via Bluetooth: If you have Microsoft Voice Command installed and it doesn't respond to your call button from the Bluetooth headset, just set this registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\VoiceCommand\Path to \Program Files\Voice Command\VoiceCMD.exe [Assuming you've installed the Voice Command in the ROM, else change the value appropriately]

  • The Soft Keys can be changed to point to programs other than Calendar and Contacts. The registry key to modify is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112 for the left soft key and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\113 for the right soft key

  • To completely switch off the device, press and hold down the power button for more than 5 seconds. A message box will pop up confirming shutdown.

  • Enabling 802.11g connectivity: If you want your device to connect to 802.11g routers, modify the following registry keys at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS

    • dot11SupportedRateMask - set it to 1

    • dot11SupportedRateMaskG - set it to 8

[Note: This hack will not increase the network speed of the device but it enables to connect to the 802.11g routers]

  • How to reset your Wizard

  • Dial pad skins

  • Scrolling through Contacts: If you were like me having 100s of contacts, scrolling through them and finding a contact might get difficult. Not any more...

    • Instead of pressing the Down navigation button once for one contact, press and hold and you can jump through alphabets

    • When a contact is selected, press the Left/Right navigation button to cycle through the phone numbers and email address
    • If you have Microsoft Voice Command installed, you can use it to lookup a contact

  • If for some reason, you need a RUN window, press and hold the "Action" button [the center button in the D pad] and then tap and hold the time display at the top right of every screen and after a few seconds [if you did it right] the RUN option will pop up.

[Note: All registry tweaks must be performed with your own concern. You can use Total Commander for Pocket PC or the Remote Registry Editor that comes with the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005]

Internet Explorer Shortcuts

Internet Explorer was/is/will be my favorite browser for browsing the net. Many people might find IE lacking in features or not comparable to their favorite browsers but I believe IE is one of the top Microsoft product. It might lack some features but it works out for me, so no problem. And with the all new IE7, comes the new features like tabbed browsing, improved UI to name some [many not new to the small percentage of people using other browsers :-)] As I'm an IE user and mostly a keyboard guy, I thought of compiling the keyboard shortcuts in IE which can make moving around IE pretty slick, so here comes my favorites...

[Note: Some of them are only IE7 related]

  • Go Back (previous) page: Backspace, ALT+Left Arrow

  • Go Forward (next) page: SHIFT+Backspace, ALT+Right Arrow

  • Stop: Escape (ESC) [stops the page from loading and also stops the background music of the page if any]

  • Refresh: F5, to refresh completely CTRL+F5

  • Shift focus to the address bar: ALT+D

  • Auto wrap with "http://www" and ".com": CTRL+Enter in the address bar

  • Toggle full screen: F11

  • Move between tabs: CTRL+TAB (forward), CTRL+SHIFT+TAB (backward)

  • Scroll: UP/DOWN arrow keys

  • Page Scroll: SPACE (downwards), SHIFT+SPACE (upwards) <-- especially useful when readig a long article

  • Move to the top: HOME

  • Move to the bottom: END

  • Shift focus to Search field: CTRL+E

  • Open Search Query in new tab: ALT+Enter

  • Dropdown Search provider list: CTRL+Down Arrow

  • Dropdown Address bar list: F4

  • Open New Tab in the foreground: CTRL+T

  • Open New Tab from the address bar: ALT+Enter

  • Switch to n'th tab: CTRL+n (n > 0 && n <= 8)

  • Switch to last tab: CTRL+9

  • Quick tabs: CTRL+Q [ESC to go back to previous tab, Use Arrow keys to navigate and Enter to bring the tab to view]

  • Move focus to the information bar: ALT+N (when information bar is visible)

  • Click on the information bar: SPACE (when information bar is visible)

  • Close the information bar: ESC (when information bar is visible and focused)

If you've any other useful easier shortcut, please do post it in the comments.

GPS gets an upgrade!

source

US federal government has upgraded the GPS signal on January 25th this year. This should improve the GPS signal strength. But the not so good news is that you need to get new devices or upgrades to be able to benefit from this signal upgrade [L2C signal]. To know how the GPS [Global Positioning System] works, head out to here. It's good to learn the trilateration basics!
